BOLE - YELLOW, RED, BLACK

code

CDO6800XX

SDS code: CDO6800
Description

The bole is a natural clay paste, used as a colloid in the preparation of the basecoat in the gilding technique. Following the amount of the iron oxides that compose it, the bole comes in various colors: red, yellow or black. The bole is used in gilding as the basis for the metallic leaf, ensuring the gilder perfectly homogeneity and stable application. The color of the bole clearly alter the depth of color of gold or silver leaf, establishing a color balance with the metal and giving it a warm effect.

Method of Usage

1

Dissolve in a water bath, using the gilders’ pot, 300 ml. bole in 900 ml. of “colletta” previously prepared from rabbit skin glue, until the mixture has a fluid and light appearance, but not watery.

1

The warm bole must be spread over the chalk surface, with a firm and light brushwork, without leaving streaks. We recommend using the Bole Application Brush, ox hair, available in three different sizes (6, 8, 10).

1

If the bole is diluted in the right proportion even just one pass is enough (you should not see the white of the plaster), otherwise after about 4 hours you can apply a second coat, trying not to improve too much the thickness of the layer, which would bring to an inevitable separation of gold and bole during burnishing.

1

Usually the complete drying of bole layer occurs in a few hours, however depending on season and humidity of the environment in which you work.
