It's a combination of traditional gesso with an acrylic polymer, added with a white pigment and additives that ensure flexibility, excellent sandability and long shelf life. It can be used for sizing, priming a canvas for painting, or creating a basecoat for the correct application of the gold leaf. Acrylic gesso can be coloured, by adding the correct quantities of Holzfarbe stain concentrate, or Waterborne Lead-Free Pigments of the COW series.

Apply as it is by brush, or diluted with a correct amount of water (max 15-20%) for spray application. If applied as basecoat for gold leaf application, it is suggested to colour the gesso reddishorange, to imitate the colour of red bole and enriching the tone of the applied gold leaf. For silver leaf dark or black tonalities are suggested.
Apply at least two or three coatings, waiting preferentially for each coat to dry.
Before the gold leaf application proceed with an accurate sanding process, in order to obtain a smooth surface. Start with coarse abrasive paper (grain 150-180) and continue sanding using step by step finer grain abrasive paper (350 - 600 - 1200), each time in crossed perpendicular directions.
Once the surface is perfectly smooth proceed with the application of the gilding size and of the gold/silver leaf.
